The Old Salt Works at Bad Reichenhall is open all year round. The guided tours always start on the hour. Please visit the online-ticket-shop to see the concrete times. Due to the constant +12°C, you are completely independent of the weather during your visit. Please allow approximately one hour for the guided tour including an individual visit to the Salt and Brand Museum.

Tip: Book your desired viewing appointment online right away to avoid waiting times on site.

The entrance fee includes a guided tour of the Old Salt Works, a visit to the Salt and Brand Museum and a final visit to the salt shop.

Guests arriving by private car will be guided to the Old Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall by the existing road signs (signs saying “Kulturzentrum Alte Saline”).

There is a limited number of paid parking spaces directly on the grounds of the Alte Saline / Old Salt Works (Südhof / South Court and Nordhof / North Court). Nevertheless, please allow sufficient time for finding a parking space.

Arrival by train

Bad Reichenhall's main railway station is only about 1.6 km away from the Old Salt Works.From there you can easily reach the Old Salt Works in about 20 minutes walking time.
Alternatively, you can use the Kirchberg train station. From there it is only a 5-minute walk to the Old Salt Works.
You can find information about train connections on the website of Deutsche Bahn (German railways).

Arrival by bus

The two scheduled buses 1 (Bayer.Gmain-Marzoll-Schwarzbach) and 2 (Piding-Karlstein-Thumsee) and the Citybus 4 (Mayerhof-Rupertus Therme) will take you on a comfortable ride to the Old Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall.
Please get off at the town hall square (Rathausplatz).From there it is only a 2 minute walk to us.

Onward journey to the Berchtesgaden salt mine

Would you like to visit the Berchtesgaden Salt Mine directly after your visit to the Old Salt Works? The best way to get there is to take the regional bus line 841 from Bad Reichenhall Tiroler Tor to ZOB/ Berchtesgaden Hbf and change there to the regional bus line 840 (direction Salzburg) to the stop called “Salzbergwerk” (salt mine).

No, due to the risk of tripping, filming and photography are unfortunately not permitted in the Old Salt Works Bad Reichenhall.

The footpath through the Old Salt Works in Bad Reichenhall is about 400 metres long and easy to manage for people of average physical fitness. Please note, however, that you will have to climb approx. 270 steps on the guided tour of the historic salt springs.

To ensure maximum safety, we ask you to consider the following points:

  • Due to the risk of tripping, photography and filming are not permitted during the tour.
  • Please do not bring hats, sticks, backpacks, back carriers or other bulky items.You can lock smaller backpacks in our lockers during the tour.
  • Prams cannot be taken underground.There is no possibility to park prams in the Old Salt Works.
  • The path may be wet and slippery.Use handrails and be careful not to trip.

Clothes and footwear

Underground it is about + 12 °C all year round. The ground can also be slippery and damp. Therefore, please make sure you wear sturdy shoes and warm clothing.

Backpacks and bulky items

Please leave your backpack, stick, umbrella or hat in the car or use our lockers at the cloakroom for them. For safety reasons, bulky objects are unfortunately not allowed underground.

On the road with children

Due to the many steps and floor conditions, the path through the underground tunnel system is unfortunately not suitable for prams or backpacks. Please use a baby sling if possible.

We were very impressed by the two huge water wheels and the children found it very exciting to go underground. Since we had already booked the ticket online, we didn't have to wait long for the tour. So, we recommend everyone to book the ticket online in advance.
